Nepal’s Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has once again made a controversial statement regarding India’s territories. He said that all the areas east of the Mahakali river, including Limpiyadhura, Kalapani and Lipu Pass, belong to Nepal. He said that the Nepal government is clear in this matter. Prachanda made this remark while answering questions raised by MPs in Nepal’s House of Representatives. Referring to the Sugauli Treaty signed between Nepal and the East India Company in 1816, he said that all these areas belong to Nepal.

What did Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda say?

According to Prachanda, a political map of Nepal has also been published, which includes these areas. The Nepal PM said that he had a meeting with the Indian Prime Minister during his visit to India. During this, an agreement was reached to revise the existing treaties and agreements, including the India-Nepal Peace Treaty. He further said that during his visit to India, he had requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to resolve all the issues. This also includes border related issues. According to Prachanda, the Indian Prime Minister has responded positively to this.

Prachanda said that a letter has been sent to India from Nepal in this matter. In the letter, it has been written to organize the seventh meeting of the Border Working Group related to the India-Nepal border. In the meeting, the completion of the remaining work on the India-Nepal border will be discussed.

Tension between India and Nepal on this issue

Nepal presented its new political map in May 2020. In this map, Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura regions were shown in Nepal. The Parliament unanimously supported it. At that time, India had strongly opposed this action of Nepal. India had termed it a unilateral decision. India had warned that the way Nepal is expanding its territorial claims is not right at all. India says that Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura are its territories. Despite India’s opposition, Nepal changed its old map and started using the new map.
