Aharon Haliva became the first senior figure to resign over his role in the deadliest attack in Israeli history.
After the resignation of Major General Aharon Haliwa, it is believed that it will have a negative impact on all those officers who failed to stop the Hamas attack. Because without any challenge, Hamas terrorists continued to sabotage Israel for hours and killed 1200 people. Also took 250 people hostage. At present, after that attack, Israel started the war against Hamas in Gaza which is now in its seventh month.
Resigned due to failures
The resigned officer wrote in his resignation letter, ‘My command could not live up to the responsibility assigned to us. I remember that dark day ever since, day after day, night after night. I will always carry this pain with me.
Shortly after the war, Haleiwa publicly acknowledged responsibility for the attack. He said that he could not fulfill the intelligence warnings and daily alerts that he was responsible for to the government and the army.
Israel is trapped between enemies
After the Hamas attack, Haleiwa and other military and security officials were expected to resign in response to their failures, but this did not happen for seven months. Because Israel is still fighting Hamas in Gaza and the Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah in the north. Tension with Iran is also at its peak after the attacks between the two enemies.
Netanyahu did not take responsibility
While Haleiwa and many others have accepted blame for failing to stop the attack, others have maintained silence on the matter. In particular, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been asked to answer difficult questions about his role, but has not accepted direct responsibility for the attack. He has also not indicated that he will step down.
