JEE Mains exam was compromised last year, and papers were leaked. CBI said: it interrogated a Russian man who was allegedly at the center of the scam.
6 Key Points
- Russian hacker Mikhail Shargin hacked into the software provided by TCS, a computer-based exam conducted across the country to determine admission to engineering colleges.
- Airport authorities knew about his case and arrival from Kazakhstan, and he was detained in Delhi.
- “He had hacked TCS Software which was the platform for the JEE Mains Exam, in order to provide remote connectivity to control computer terminals of candidates appearing for the exam,” said sources.
- Indulged students were able to cheat because ‘teachers’ or impersonators were able to take charge of their computers and take the exam instead of students. A private coaching institute named Affinity Education in Uttar Pradesh’s Noida had solved the question paper for students. Around ₹ 12-15 lakh rupees was paid to the institute.
- The ‘remote access’ was provisioned by the examination center in Sonepat in Haryana. Twenty students were believed to have cheated and were banned from taking the exam for the next three years.
- A case was then registered by the CBI, which conducted raids in different cities and seized laptops and other equipment used in the scam.
