These days, the difference between expensive smartphones is mainly determined by the design and camera. Smartphone manufacturers can’t do much about processor speed. Such is the situation with RAM and storage that paying more than this would be absurd. Last year’s flagship smartphone Nokia 8 marked the return of the Nokia brand to the top smartphone market. The handset impressed in terms of performance. But the design, features and specifications did not impress us much. A year later, we have the Nokia 8 Sirocco at Mobile World Congress 2018. It aims to address the shortcomings of the older variant.

nokia 8 sirocco The timing of the launch of Nokia 8 raises many questions. Because most of the expensive smartphones of the companies will come with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 845 processor. Whereas in Nokia 8 Sirocco, it has been decided to use last year’s flagship processor Snapdragon 835. It is expected that the price of this phone will be slightly less. But HMD Global will hope that users will start loving this phone.

Unlike aluminium, which is used by most companies today, Nokia 8 Sirocco is made from a single block of stainless steel. It is claimed that it is two and a half times stronger than aluminium. The popular Nokia 8800 Sirocco was a stainless steel special edition of the company’s most expensive smartphone. This phone was made for those who wanted to use mobile phones as a status symbol.

Even though the emphasis is on stainless steel, the phone’s outer body is 95% glass. It’s extremely slick, but smudges and fingerprints are extremely easy to catch. Within two minutes, our demo unit was full of smudges and we had to clean it repeatedly. It’s only available in a black colour variant, which makes smudges stand out even more.

Nokia 8 Sirocco has a 5.5 inch screen. This pOLED panel has QuadHD (1440×2560 pixels) resolution. This means the aspect ratio is 16:9. A little screen space is wasted due to the curved edges. In such a situation, it will not be easy to focus on full screen videos and games.

The body is 7.5 mm thin. But it gets thinner at the edges. Because of this, we were not completely sure about our grip on the phone at times. It is a slim phone. Because of this, the audio socket has been omitted. But you will get a 3.5 mm dongle from USB-Type C. Due to the glass back, Nokia has been able to make Qi wireless charging a part of this phone.

On the rear, you will find two cameras, which have been created in partnership with Carl Zeiss. One is a 12-megapixel sensor, with a wide lens and f / 1.75 aperture. The secondary camera is 13 megapixels. It is a telephoto lens and is equipped with f / 2.6 aperture. On the front panel, there is a 5-megapixel sensor with f / 2.0 aperture that comes with an 84-degree field of view. HMD Global now calls the Bothie feature as Dual Sight. With its help, you can superimpose pictures taken from the front and rear cameras on top of each other.

The performance is strong due to the Snapdragon 835 processor. But there were not many apps on the phone, so we will be able to say something about the performance of the phone only after a detailed review. The phone has 6 GB of RAM and inbuilt storage is 128 GB. However, there is no support for microSD card. The battery is 3260 mAh and it supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0. You will get features like Wi-Fi AC, Bluetooth 5, NFC and 24-bit audio recording.

By the time HMD Global launches the Nokia 8 Sirocco in India (in May), many flagship smartphones of 2018 will have come with new hardware. But it is possible that people will be attracted to this phone only because of its looks. It feels good in the hand and is also very premium. This phone has become better than the Nokia 8. But we will give our final verdict in the detailed review.
