Maldives Politics: Before the parliamentary elections in Maldives, President Mohammed Muizzu’s troubles seem to be increasing. The opposition party is attacking the leaked intelligence report on Muizzu’s alleged corruption. The opposition is demanding impeachment against Mohammad Muizzu. On the other hand, Muizzu has completely rejected the allegations against him. There are parliamentary elections in Maldives on Sunday, in which the opposition parties Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Muizzu’s People’s National Congress (PNC) are attacking each other.
According to local media reports, this political storm came when an intelligence report was shared on the X platform by the handle named ‘Hassan Kurusi’. This report contained some papers related to Maldives Monetary Authority and Maldives Police Service, prepared by the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), which allegedly mentioned the corruption of President Mohammed Muizzu.
Allegation of concealing transactions
According to Maldives Republic News Portal, these intelligence documents mention the events of the year 2018. In these, irregularities have been claimed in transferring money to the personal bank account of Mohammad Muizzu. These documents clearly focus on 10 points related to financial irregularities. It said that ‘political influence has been used to hide the transactions and an attempt has been made to hide the reality of the fund through corporate entities.’
Demand for cooperation in investigation
After this intelligence report came out, a political storm arose in Maldives. By posting this report on social media, political people started making various comments, after which both MDP and PNF parties have demanded an investigation into the matter. On the other hand, former Maldives President Jamil Ahmed re-posted the leaked intelligence report on social media and talked about the need for accountability at all levels of governance. Also demanded impeachment of Mohammad Muizzu after the allegations of alleged corruption.
What did Muizzu say on the allegations?
Prominent member of Maldives Progressive Party, Jamil has also accused Muizzu of corruption in his ambitious scheme Ras Male Development Project. Jamil has told Mohammad Muizzu that he should cooperate in the independent investigation of these allegations. On the other hand, Mohammad Muizzu rejected these allegations outright and said that the opposition is trying to trap him, but they will not succeed. Muizzu said that the opposition cannot provide even a single evidence of corruption against him. He said that the opposition is currently in a state of frustration, hence fabricated reports are being made and shared.
