The Cellular Operators Association of India has raised objections to tech giant Microsoft including online shopping platform Amazon. Actually, till some time ago, Amazon’s delivery updates were received through SMS on mobile phones, but now companies are using apps like Whatsapp, Telegram for this, which has been said to be against the rules, and for the security of the country. Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has written a letter to Telecom Secretary Neeraj Mittal. Amazonhas filed a complaint against tech giants like Microsoft alleging that these companies are illegally delivering updates to customers. Earlier the updates which used to come through SMS are now being sent through Whatsapp and Telegram, which is an illegal method. The association says that due to this the government and telecom service providers are incurring a loss of about Rs 3000 crore every year. The association has said that these companies are avoiding using the legal route to send SMS. This is a violation of licensing and safety rules, causing loss of revenue to the government. It has also been said that this may pose a threat to national security.

According to the report, the revenue from such commercial SMS last year i.e. 2022-2023 was Rs 2500 crore. If companies start sending delivery update messages through WhatsApp and Telegram, then telecom operators will suffer a big loss. In the letter, the association has demanded that WhatsApp and Telegram be declared illegal platforms for sending commercial messages. In India, Rs 0.13 is charged for such messages. Whereas for global message, Rs 4 to 4.5 is charged per alert. According to the association, companies want to avoid this cost.
