New Delhi. The Annual Conference (AGM) of the International Cricket Council (ICC) is starting in Colombo from Friday. During this time, all eyes will be on the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Jay Shah. There can be a serious discussion in the AGM on when Jay Shah will take over as ICC Chairman. Currently, Greg Barclay of New Zealand is the ICC Chairman.

The ICC has suffered a loss of about US $ 20 million from hosting the T20 World Cup 2024 in the US. This will also be a major topic of discussion in the ICC’s AGM. However, the financial details of the tournament are not included in the nine-point agenda of the AGM. But it will be discussed by the board in the form of a ‘post-event report’, which has always been the case.

Along with discussions on ICC membership, Associate Members Meeting report and ICC Development Award presentation, appointment of new external auditor of ICC is also on the agenda. Hosting of Champions Trophy and whether India will participate in it or not is also a hot topic at the moment. Although this is not a part of the official agenda of ICC Board. But it can be brought up for discussion with the permission of the Chairman under a special resolution.

However, apart from all this, the focus of the AGM may remain on the upcoming role of Jay Shah, who is almost certain to become the ICC chairman. An ICC source said, ‘It is not about how, but about when. He still has one year left as BCCI secretary. After this, as per the constitution, his break (cooling off period) in the Indian board will start in 2025. If he has to take charge in 2025, then Barclay will not be able to complete his third term of two years from December 2024 to December 2026.’

He said, ‘One idea is that what if the tenure of ICC presidency is changed from three terms of two years each to two terms of three years each, then the total tenure will remain six years only.’ It is believed that if Barclay’s current term is of three years, then Shah can complete six years as BCCI secretary and then become ICC chairman for three years in 2025. During that time his break in BCCI will start. Then in 2028, he can return to BCCI and become the board president. (input language)
