Vehicles parked on the road are advised to switch off their engine if they keep their vehicle parked at a signal for more than two minutes. This is done to save petrol and pollution. But have you noticed, this does not happen with railway diesel engines. No matter how long the train engine has to stand at a station, it is not switched off even after a few hours. Experts give not just one but many reasons for this.
In answer to this question, many experts give many reasons. According to everyone, the reason for this lies in the functioning of the engine and its use. The first or biggest reason is economic. Keeping the engine running can save both energy and time, rather than shutting it down and restarting it. It takes half an hour for a train’s diesel engine to heat up. And the amount of diesel spent in its preparation. The engine can run for 8 hours at that time. You will be surprised to know that similar logic applies to electric engines also.
Another reason for not switching off the engine, even if it is electric, is the need for them to be always ready. It takes time for them to start. In such a situation, it is obvious that shutting down the engines when they should be ready to start immediately would be a very expensive task. Many other problems will also arise which will increase the loss.

The third reason is to protect the engine from damage. Stopping and starting the engine repeatedly can increase the chances of its parts getting damaged or broken. Therefore, keeping them running is considered part of maintenance. And it also helps in maintaining the minimum temperature required for the engine components.
Another important reason is to keep the air system in the locomotive and the train behind it charged. Without that air, the train’s brakes could fail. Once air is released from the train, it may take anywhere from 30 minutes to over an hour for the train’s air system to be fully charged. This loss of time also occurs due to switching off the engine.
