According to media reports, Mojtaba Khamenei has been elected the new supreme leader of Iran. Mojtaba Khamenei is the second son of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. According to reports, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s health is not well and that is why Mojtaba has been chosen as the new leader to lead the country. However, this has not been officially confirmed by Iran yet.
There was talk for a long time about Mojtaba becoming the successor of Ayatollah Khamenei.
According to media reports, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei himself had called the members of the Expert Assembly and asked them to take a decision on the successor. The same assembly unanimously agreed to the name of Mojtaba Khamenei. However, this entire process was completed with utmost secrecy. There was talk for a long time about Mojtaba Khamenei becoming the successor of Ayatollah Ali Khomeini. This was the reason that despite not holding any position in the government of Iran, he was involved in important decisions. It is said about Mojtaba Khamenei that he keeps a very low profile and appears in public only on rare occasions.

Mojtaba Khamenei was born in 1969 in Mashhad, Iran. Mojtaba Khamenei has deep influence in the government of Iran and it is said that Iran’s intelligence and armed forces also include people close to Mojtaba Khamenei. Mojtaba Khamenei has also participated in the Iran-Iraq war. Mojtaba Khamenei has received a religious education and is knowledgeable on Islamic matters, but he is not counted among the top-level religious leaders. Mojtaba has been active behind the scenes in Iranian politics since 1990 and is considered to have played an important role in making former Iranian President Mohammad Ahmadinejad the President. Mojtaba also has a hold on Iran’s media and in 2014, he fired the director of Iran’s state TV IRIB. When there were protests in Iran in 2009, Mojtaba is considered to be the brain behind suppressing them strictly. Many people were killed during that time.

Ayatollah Khamenei has six children and Mojtaba Khamenei is the second, but the reason why Khamenei did not make his elder son Mustafa his successor is not clear.
