Britain will go to the polls today after British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced a sudden election in May. But since the announcement of the election, everyone’s attention has been on the Prime Minister’s Conservative Party as well as the Labour Party candidate and opposition leader Keir Starmer. Starmer is not a fiery politician, but the Labour Party believes that his stable and reliable leadership is what Britain needs after 14 years of Conservative rule. 61-year-old Starmer is a strong contender to win the upcoming election.

Who is the prime ministerial candidate Keir Starmer?

Keir Starmer was born on September 2, 1962 in Oxted, Surrey, to a working class family. His mother was a nurse who suffered from a rare and severe case of rheumatoid arthritis while his father worked as an instrument maker. Starmer attended Reigate Grammar School and was the first in his family to go to university. He studied law at Leeds University.

Starmer was a distinguished human rights lawyer before entering politics. Known as a left-wing lawyer for his commitment to social justice, he began his career as a barrister in 1987 and co-founded Doughty Street Chambers in 1990. He has specialised in human rights cases as well as representing clients through legal aid and pro bono work. Starmer was recognised with a Queen’s Counsel (QC) appointment in 2002 and as QC of the Year.

Starmer represented the “McLibel Two” in their landmark defamation case against McDonald’s. He also travelled to the Caribbean and Africa to represent defendants facing the death penalty. He also challenged the Tony Blair government’s invasion of Iraq, preparing the legal argument against the war.

‘Sunak will suffer the consequences not because of his performance but because of the work of old conservative leaders’

Talking on different aspects of the government, the voter said that the Conservative camp is going to lose. Some of the main reasons for this are the change of Prime Ministers in a very short time, the mess in the National Health Service (NHS). He said that the possible victory of the Labor Party is his personal opinion. Expressing support for the current Prime Minister and Indian-origin Rishi Sunak, another resident of Britain said, he is a good Prime Minister, but the previous leaders of the Conservative Party have created problems. The current Prime Minister Sunak may lose not because of his performance but because of the previous leaders. He said that despite being a very good Prime Minister, Sunak did not have enough time. Apart from these, an Indian-origin woman expressed confidence that the Labor Party will win the election. However, personally she likes Rishi Sunak.
