A few hours before PM Modi’s arrival in the US, the White House met a group of Sikhs supporting the Khalistan movement. During this, the White House assured them of “protection from any international aggression on their soil”.

The White House said it stands with American citizens to protect them from any harm within the country’s borders. This development comes amid concerns that Canada and the US are providing shelter to Khalistani separatists.

In fact, groups associated with the Khalistan movement are banned in India. Many of these organizations have carried out terrorist activities in the last few decades. While the US has not made any official comment on “giving shelter” to such elements. At the same time, Canada has called it its “freedom of expression”.

What did Jaishankar say on US support to Khalistanis?

On this matter, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said, “India respects and follows freedom of expression, but freedom of expression does not mean freedom to support separatism. It does not mean freedom to threaten foreign diplomats or give political space to elements advocating violence.” He said, “In any rule-based society, you would think that you would check the background of people, how they came, what passport they had, etc.”

Jaishankar had said, “If you have people whose presence itself is recorded on very questionable documents, what does that say about you? It actually says that your vote bank is actually more powerful than your rule of law.”

Know why the White House meeting took place?

The meeting was held at the official White House premises. It was attended by Preetpal Singh of the American Sikh Caucus Committee and representatives of the Sikh Coalition and the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund.

Meanwhile, Preetpal Singh, founder of the American Sikh Caucus Committee, told PTI, “Yesterday we had the opportunity to thank senior federal government officials for saving the lives of Sikh Americans and being vigilant in protecting our community. We asked them to do more, and we stand by their assurance that they will do so.”
