Yamuna in spate due to heavy rains, Yamunotri

Torrential rains have caused massive destruction from Uttarakhand to Gujarat and Maharashtra. Torrential rains and landslides during the last 24 hours have wreaked havoc on Yamunotri Dham in Uttarakhand and its last stop Janki Chatti. The water level of the Yamuna river has risen and some parts of the Yamunotri temple complex have been damaged. At the same time, flood-like conditions have arisen in Navsari district of Gujarat and Kolhapur district of Maharashtra due to heavy rains. Many low-lying areas have been submerged and more than 4,000 people have been evacuated to safer places.

According to the report received from Uttarkashi, the torrential rain that started at around 12 o’clock on Thursday night in the Yamunotri area continued till Friday morning. Due to this landslide and rising water level of Yamuna, the temporary bridge, security wall, kitchen and priest meeting room including the Yamunotri temple complex have been damaged. Three mules were washed away while a bike got buried in the debris due to water and debris entering the Janki Chatti bus parking. The Yamuna river had assumed a fierce form by the time it came from Yamunotri Dham to Janki Chatti. People present in the dhabas built around the bus parking somehow escaped and saved their lives. By evening, the water level of the river decreased, but the Janki Chatti bus parking is filled with boulders and debris.
