Ajit Doval on Thursday briefed Russian President Vladimir Putin on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv amid fresh efforts to find a peaceful solution to the Ukraine conflict.

Meanwhile, Putin has proposed a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Modi during the BRICS summit to be held in Kazan next month. Putin made this proposal during his meeting with Doval in St. Petersburg on Thursday.

In a video released by Russian media, Doval told Putin, “As the Prime Minister told you during the telephone conversation, he is looking forward to giving you information about his visit to Ukraine and his meeting with President Zelensky. He (Prime Minister Modi) wanted me to come personally and give you information about this conversation.”

This meeting took place during the conference of National Security Advisors of BRICS (Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa) countries in St. Petersburg.

The Putin-Doval meeting took place nearly three weeks after Modi’s visit to the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky. The BRICS summit will be held in the Russian city of Kazan on October 22-24. Prime Minister Modi may attend this summit.

Russian media quoted Putin’s statements in the meeting with Doval as saying, “We are waiting for our good friend Modi and wish him all the best.”

The NSA held extensive talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu on Wednesday and discussed important issues of “mutual interest”. The issue of Modi’s conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kiev on August 23 also came up in the talks between the two NSAs.

The Indian Embassy in Russia said on the talks between Doval and Shoigu, “The two sides reviewed the progress in bilateral cooperation and discussed important issues of mutual interest.”

In his talks with Zelensky, Modi had said that both Ukraine and Russia should sit together without wasting time to end the war and India is ready to play an “active role” in restoring peace in the region.
