The US Deputy Foreign Minister has given a big statement in which he has said that America needs Indian students to study science subjects, not Chinese students. He said that students coming from China are welcome to study subjects like humanities. He said that American universities are restricting Chinese students’ access to sensitive technology due to security concerns.

Suspicions increased about Chinese students in America

The US Deputy Secretary of State expressed concern that not enough American students are studying science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). In such a situation, the US needs to recruit more international students in these fields, but from India and not from China, as India is an important security partner of the US. For many years, Chinese students have been the largest community of international students studying in the US. In the academic year 2022-23, the number of Chinese students studying in the US was around 2,90,000. However, the deterioration in relations between the US and China and concerns about the theft of American expertise have derailed scientific cooperation between the two countries. Due to this, Chinese students are being viewed with suspicion in the US.

“I would like to see Chinese students come to the US in large numbers to study subjects, but in the humanities and social sciences rather than in the sciences,” Kurt Campbell said at an event hosted by the Council on Foreign Relations think tank.
