Last year, HIV virus, which causes AIDS, was found in about 4 crore people in the world. Out of these, 90 lakh people could not get any treatment for it. As a result, every minute one or the other patient was dying due to AIDS.

This disclosure was made by the United Nations in its latest report on Monday. This is the situation when the world is making progress towards ending the AIDS epidemic. The UN report shows that the pace of its progress has started slowing down. The reason for this is the lack of funds. Because of this, the infection is increasing in three new regions, the Middle East, North Africa, Eastern Europe, Central Asia and Latin America.
Last year more than 6 lakh people lost their lives
About 630,000 people will die from AIDS-related illnesses in 2023, down from 2.1 million in 2004. The latest figure is more than double the target of 250,000 fewer deaths set for 2025, according to a report by UNAIDS, the United Nations agency leading global efforts to end the epidemic.
We will end AIDS by 2030
UNAIDS Executive Director Winnie Byanyima said global leaders have pledged to end AIDS by 2030. But the report said new infections were set to more than triple in 2023, to 1.3 million.
- Gender inequality has led to increased HIV cases among adolescents and young women in parts of Africa.
- The proportion of new infections globally among marginalized communities is projected to increase from 45% in 2010 to 55% by 2023.
- The cost of two injections for a year is $40,000 (Rs 33.47 lakh), which is beyond the reach of the common man.
