After mist and fog during the day on Sunday, there was bright sunshine on Monday. This brought some relief from the icy cold, but due to rain and snowfall in the high altitude areas of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, melting cold was felt in most areas. The minimum temperature increased marginally and was recorded between 7-10 degrees Celsius. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, there will be light fog at some places and dense fog at other places for the next three days from Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana to Bihar. The department has issued orange and yellow alerts regarding this. There is also a possibility of rain in the plains around the western Himalayan region from January 30 to February 4.

Mercury near normal in Punjab-Haryana

The mercury has also reached close to normal in Punjab and Haryana, which have been facing the brunt of winter for some time. The minimum temperature in Chandigarh, the joint capital of both the states, was recorded at 7.4 degrees Celsius on Monday morning. Bhiwani in Haryana recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 7.7 degrees Celsius. Temperatures in other parts of the state like Sirsa, Karnal, Hisar and Ambala remained between 8-10 degrees. At the same time, the temperature in Ludhiana in Punjab was 7.2 degrees. Amritsar, Patiala, Faridkot and Gurdaspur recorded temperatures between 8-10.2 degrees Celsius. The mercury remained at 6.6 degrees in Bathinda on Sunday night.

White sheet of snow spread in Kashmir valley

Snowfall has continued in most areas of Kashmir Valley since Sunday and it also rained in some areas on Monday. Tourist places like Gulmarg, Sonmarg and Sintham Top received heavy snowfall. Along with the ski-resort of Gurez, there has been fresh snowfall on the high peaks of Kupwara in North Kashmir. There has also been snowfall in Zojila and Dras on the Srinagar-Leh highway.

Coldest day after two years

This year there were a total of five cold days in the month of January, which is the highest in the last two years. Before this, there were seven cold days in January 2022. Talking about cold wave, so far this year there has been cold wave for five days.
