America is one of those countries where the jails are always full and the administration has to work on plans to build new jails. The state of California has no shortage of jails, but most of them have a much higher number of prisoners. Ayrwood State Jail, just north of the Mexican border in the Colorado desert, is famous as the world’s unique jail for this reason. It is overcrowded to such an extent that the prisoners have to be armed and “ready for war” all the time.
Since its opening in 1994, the prison’s high concrete walls have seen all sorts of deadly inmates come in and out. Over the years, overcrowding has led to explosive inmate violence. The prison is designed for 2,200 men, but Ironwood often houses more than twice its capacity. According to the latest data, the prison is operating at 118% over its volume limit.
The stifling overcrowded conditions, combined with the brutal heat of the Colorado desert, are a problem. Ironwood is known for its chaotic prison riots that run at dangerously high levels. Just last February, a statewide warning was issued after nearly 200 Ironwood prison officers were involved in a planned attack. This was not the first incident this year. The prison is home to hundreds of warring gangs that band together for protection, often with deadly results.

Officials with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) are currently investigating the death of a prison employee, and are treating the case as a homicide. Luis Padilla, 42, was serving a life sentence before he was allegedly attacked by three other inmates who stabbed him multiple times.
It has been observed that some jail employees resort to simple methods to hide weapons openly. How even the smallest weapons are hidden inside the jail. Prisoners keep themselves ready to face and face all kinds of attacks through exercise etc.
