There are many ponds and natural lakes located in the Himalayan areas here, which are also mentioned in the Puranas. Roopkund lake is located in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, which is known as the ‘Mysterious Lake’. But do you know that there is a lake near Nainital in Uttarakhand, whose water color keeps changing throughout the year. Due to which this lake is also known as ‘mysterious’ and ‘color changing’ lake.

Apart from Naini Lake, there are many other lakes in Nainital district including Bhimtal, Sattal, Naukuchiatal, Kamal Tal, Garud Tal. One of these lakes is Khurpatal Lake. This lake is located at a distance of about 12 kilometers from the district headquarters. Khurpatal Lake is known for its unique feature. Actually, this lake is famous for changing its color.

This is why the color changes
Dr. Lalit Tiwari, Professor of Botany Department of DSB College, Nainital, Uttarakhand, told Local 18 during a special conversation that the color changing Khurpatal Lake is located at an altitude of about 1635 meters above sea level. The shape of this lake is like a horseshoe. Professor Tiwari says that the water of this pond changes color due to the algae present in it. The color of the pigment of the algae is blue, pale green, brown and light red. When the rays of the sun fall on these algae, the color of the water appears different due to reflection.

Purity by color
Professor Dr. Lalit Tiwari further said that if the colour of the water is blue then the amount of algae is very less and the water is pure and drinkable. If the colour of the water is green then the amount of algae is excessive and if the colour of the water is brown then the reason for this is the shade of the trees and plants located around the lake. In the winter season, the water of this lake remains lukewarm.
