Harikant Sharma/Agra: You must have seen different customs and rituals of marriage in many castes, religions and tribes. Many times customs also change depending on the region. Such customs are not seen anywhere else, but there is a unique marriage custom among the people of Bagri community, a nomadic caste who basically live in the areas of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. Here, before marriage, the bride has to memorize and recite the quatrains of Ramayana and Sunderkand. This unique custom has been going on among the people of this society for years. Deepak and Roshni got married following the same tradition in Agra, which is now becoming very famous among the people.

Roshni, originally from Jhansi, is married to Deepak, a resident of Agra. Deepak lives in Agra’s Sector 3 Housing Development and works as a seller of utensils in exchange for clothes. On Tuesday, he got married to Roshni of Bagri community of Jhansi. The people of the Sangh, which is looking after the work of the nomadic tribe society, gave a warm welcome to Deepak and Roshni at Agra Cantt Railway Station. Roshni is very happy to go to Agra.

Roshni wants to ignite the flame of education in future too
Roshni told that there are total 10 members in her family. There has been a tradition in the Bagri community for many years that whenever a girl becomes marriageable. Before that, the girl is made to memorize Ramayana Sunderkand, some verses of Geeta and Chopai. The girl should memorize 5 to 10 verses. When a girl gets married, the bride recites shlokas to the groom’s side. He also narrated the Chaupai of Ramayana and only then their marriage was fixed. Along with this, they have many such customs which are different from those of common people. There are only 4 rounds instead of 7.

The only reason given for listening to shlokas is that people remain connected to religion and Puranas. Roshni says that she has to study further because not many people in her society are educated. Shlokas are taught to them in their school and when they are memorized, they are also given gifts.
