Muharram in Afghanistan: Shia Muslims are facing a lot of problems under the Taliban rule in Afghanistan. The Shia Muslims of Afghanistan have accused the Taliban fighters of tearing flags and uprooting tents. Afghan Shia Muslims said that they are being suppressed in their own country. The Taliban is not allowing them to mourn Muharram.

Recently, the Taliban have taken strict measures against those mourning Ashura in Herat and many other provinces, due to which the Shia community is calling itself in the grip of Taliban repression.

Taliban ban on celebrating Muharram
According to Hasht-e-Subh Daily media, the Taliban in Herat have instructed Shia Muslims to hold Muharram celebrations only at specific places designated by the group. A Shia religious scholar told Hasht-e-Subh Daily that several meetings have been held with Shia scholars regarding Muharram. The Taliban stressed that the celebrations should be held in designated and limited areas. No roads or sidewalks should be closed for pedestrians during Muharram.

Opposition to Taliban government
A speech by Ahmadullah Muttaqi, head of the Taliban’s Information and Culture Directorate in Herat, is becoming increasingly viral on social media these days, in which he has described Muharram celebrations as ‘political and foreign innovations’. During a meeting with Shia scholars in the Muharram Organizing Committee last week, the Taliban official said that ‘political innovations’ should be stopped during Ashura. On the other hand, people have reacted strongly to Muttaqi’s speech.

Five people were arrested for protesting
Meanwhile, people of Jebrial township in Herat province said that in the last five days, the Taliban has torn the flags of mourners several times at night. He said that aggressive Taliban fighters have arrested five residents of the Shia-dominated Jebrial area. Ali Raza, a resident of the same township, said that the Taliban has deployed many fighters in the area, who tear the flags at night.

Shia Muslims forced to remain silent
Ali Raza said that ‘For the last six-seven days we have been preparing for Muharram, putting up tents, flags and making arrangements for tea and water for mourning ceremonies, but the Taliban is working against us and our religion.’ Residents of Herat said that ‘Taliban forces have come to Jebrial on the pretext of providing security, but instead of providing security, they uproot the tents and flags installed on the roads and entrances of houses at night. The Taliban look at us with hatred and we are forced to remain silent.’
