Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry has rejected the claims of the Philippines and Vietnam on the extended continental shelf in the disputed area of the South China Sea. This could increase tensions in the South China Sea. According to media reports, Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry said that the actions of both countries violate Taiwan’s sovereignty and international and maritime laws.

Tension may increase in South China Sea after Taiwan’s claim

The Taiwanese Foreign Ministry said in a press release on Friday that the claims made by both countries are “unacceptable” and stressed the sovereign rights of the Republic of China (Taiwan) over its islands in the South China Sea.

However, Taiwan also said that Taiwan is ready to resolve issues related to the South China Sea ‘on the basis of consultation’ with the international community.

Vietnam and Philippines claimed it

Vietnam claimed the boundaries of the continental shelf in the South China Sea. After which Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement and rejected Vietnam’s claim outright. A month ago, the Philippines had also made a similar claim. Vietnam and the Philippines are demanding a continental shelf up to 200 nautical miles from their coasts. This demand has also been made in the United Nations. The South China Sea region is already facing tension due to China’s dominance and many countries including China, Taiwan as well as the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesia have made claims in the disputed waters of the South China Sea.
