The Himachal Pradesh government, which is facing criticism over Vikramaditya Singh’s announcement to make it mandatory for street vendors to display their names, on Thursday said no such decision has been taken. Public Works and Urban Development Minister Singh told reporters on Wednesday that it will be mandatory for street vendors, especially those selling food items, to display identity cards at their shops. He said the decision was inspired by a similar directive announced by the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government.
Dissociating itself from Vikramaditya Singh’s comments, the state government in a statement said it has not taken any decision to make it mandatory for street vendors to display nameplates or other identity cards at their shops. Singh said the decision was taken keeping in mind the “apprehensions” expressed by many locals about the increasing number of migrants in the state. He also criticized several leaders of India Bloc for posting their comments on Facebook.
