Look and texture
Samsung users have been complaining for years about the lack of innovative design in the Galaxy series smartphones. The South Korean company has made some design changes in its premium segment smartphones, but the budget and mid-range smartphones largely come with the old Samsung style. The Galaxy J7 Prime is also a part of that crowd.

This phone has a physical home button below the display, surrounded by capacitive recent and back buttons. Apart from the metal rear panel, the build of the new J7 Prime feels sturdy and its curved rounded edges make it comfortable to hold. The Galaxy J7 Prime is a bit thick at 8 millimeters thick. However, despite having a 5.5 inch screen, the weight of the phone is 167 grams. The phone has a 3.5 mm audio jack and a micro-USB port at the bottom. The phone has the Samsung logo above the display. Apart from this, there is company branding on the rear also.

Compared to other phones in the same price range, the metal body given in Galaxy J7 Prime definitely makes it better. The phone has 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass on the front, which gives the phone a premium feel. With a 5.5-inch screen size, the J7 Prime is not easy to use with one hand and during our review we could only use it with both hands. Having a metal rear panel also makes the handset slip a bit, especially when the hands are sweaty. There is a power button on the right side of the phone and SIM and microSD card slots are provided parallel to it. Samsung has given separate slots for SIM and microSD card in J7 Prime. Due to which the user will not have to choose between the first SIM or microSD card like the hybrid slot.

Galaxy J7 Prime has a camera with LED flash on the rear. It is worth noting that the rear panel of the phone is not completely made of metal and plastic panels have been used at the top and bottom. However, because of the paint it looks like metal.

The Galaxy J7 Prime has a fingerprint sensor integrated into the home button. The fingerprint sensor is always easy to use. With this the device can be unlocked quickly. Double tapping the home button opens the camera and it works even when the phone is locked.

Talking about software, Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime has new S Power Planning and S Secure feature. The phone also has ultra-data saving mode and S bike mode. However, these two feature smartphones have also been given in previous smartphones.

With S Power Planning, users can use the remaining battery for longer periods of time. The company has given a new battery management system, it has been named S Power Planning. The company says that keeping your needs in mind, it gives you many facilities when the battery is low. If your phone’s battery is getting low then you can reserve the battery for important calls and messages. This is possible by reducing unnecessary background activity. With the help of this feature, you will be able to forward all your incoming calls to a specific number in case the battery drains.

The company has introduced a new feature S Secure with this handset. With its help you will be able to lock and hide any particular app. Apart from this, you will be able to keep any content private and secure. The Galaxy J7 Prime also features Secure Wi-Fi that encrypts data while on a public Wi-Fi hotspot.

Apart from this, the S Bike mode given in J7 Prime was earlier seen in Galaxy J3 (6). The S Bike Mode feature has been designed keeping in mind that incoming phone calls do not cause any inconvenience to the two-wheeler rider. Once this feature is activated, the user will be able to detect incoming calls through a feature called ‘Smart Reply’ in the phone. Additionally, users can also activate this mode by tapping the Galaxy J3 (6) with the NFC tag that comes with it in the retail box. The company says that the NFC tag can be pasted on the petrol tank of the bike or on the helmet, so that the user can easily activate and deactivate this mode. While riding, the caller will be informed through a pre-recorded message that the user is not able to take the call as he is on a two-wheeler. While this mode is active, the user will not detect the incoming call nor will he face any kind of problem due to the absence of any vibration or ring during the incoming call. However, callers to Galaxy J3 (6) users will be able to call directly by pressing 1 in case of an emergency.

Keeping user convenience in mind, Samsung has defaulted S Power Planning, S Secure, Secure Wi-Fi and S Bike Mode in the quick settings panel.

Galaxy J7 Prime has a 13-megapixel rear camera with aperture F/1.9 and LED flash. The large aperture lets in more light in every shot, resulting in detailed photos during the day. Most of the pictures taken from the phone’s camera come with good colors and crisp. We noted that focusing was easy with this handset.

Whereas indoors or in low light, the Galaxy J7 Prime produces good crisp pictures. However, when zoomed to full size, the pictures get scattered a bit. Overall, the performance of the rear camera of J7 is quite good. The phone records only full-HD resolution videos.

Selfie comes with detailing with 8 megapixel camera given in J7 Prime and aperture F/1.9. In low light, pictures from the front camera come with some noise. The camera app on the J7 is easy to use and launches quickly.

During our review process, the Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime handled almost every task with ease. The octa-core processor given in the phone works very well and we have no complaints about it. Games like Dead Trigger 2 run smoothly on the phone. Multitasking is done well in J7 Prime and apps also launch quickly.

While using this device, we observed that about 1.3 GB memory was free in the phone all the time, which is quite a good thing. It is fun to watch videos and play games on the 5.5 inch screen. The sound from the speaker is quite good and we did not face any problem even at high volume. Samsung didn’t send us headphones in the box so we tested the audio quality with our own headphones and we found it to be quite good.

However, the fingerprint sensor provided in Galaxy J7 Prime disappointed us a bit. Most of the time it works well but sometimes it takes multiple presses of the home button to unlock the phone. We have seen better smartphones that work faster in smartphones priced lower than J7 Prime.

During our review, we did not face any problem with 4G connectivity on the Galaxy J7 Prime. And we could use 4G Vodafone SIM smoothly all the time.

The Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime returned very good numbers in our standard benchmark tests.
