Vladimir Putin warns America: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday (July 28) threatened the US by saying that if the US confirms its intention to deploy missiles in Germany or any part of Europe, he will resume the production of medium-range nuclear weapons. He said this during a naval parade in St. Petersburg.

According to news agency AFP, he said, “If the United States implements such plans, we will consider ourselves free from the previously adopted unilateral ban on the deployment of medium and short-range strike capabilities.” Putin said that now the development of several such systems in Russia is in the final stages.

“We will take similar steps in their deployment, taking into account the actions of the US and its satellites over Europe and other regions of the world,” the Russian president warned. The missiles, which can travel 500 to 5,500 kilometres (300-3,400 miles), were the subject of an arms control treaty signed by the US and the Soviet Union in 1987. Both Washington and Moscow withdrew from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty in 2019 and accused each other of violating it.

The 1987 treaty was abolished in 2019

However, Russia later said it would not resume production of such missiles until the US deploys missiles abroad. In early July, the US and Germany announced that relevant deployments of long-range US missiles, including Tomahawk cruise missiles, in Germany would begin in 2026.

Putin said that important Russian administrative and military sites will come within the range of missiles that can be equipped with nuclear weapons in the future, which will put our territories within their range within 10 minutes of attack. The Russian President also said that the US has deployed Typhon medium-range missile systems in Denmark and the Philippines in recent exercises.
