Chennai. Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma gave his opinion on the impact player rule of the Indian Premier League. Lucknow Super Giants advisor Adam Voges has joined the ongoing debate for this rule. He said he prefers the ‘Power Surge’ rule in Australia’s Big Bash League, in which the batting team gets a chance to decide the fielding restrictions in the two-over phase.
The ‘Impact’ player rule was introduced last season and there is a lot of debate going on about it this season. Many players including Indian captain Rohit Sharma are calling it harmful for all-rounders. Voges also agrees with this and said that this rule is making cricket exciting but it is hurting all-rounder players. The Australian said after the six-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings on Tuesday night, “Big scores are being made in the tournament and strong batsmen for the team are coming out to bat at number seven or eight.”
He said, “It has definitely increased the excitement level of cricket but it also reduces the role of the all-rounder and his influence in the match. All-rounders always provide balance to the team and perhaps they are no longer so important with the ‘impact sub’.
When asked about comparison with the ‘Power Surge’ rule in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL), Voges said that it makes the match interesting. And they like this rule. While in IPL there is a powerplay of six overs at the beginning of the innings, in BBL there is a powerplay of four overs. The ‘Power Surge’ is a two-over phase of only two fielders outside the circle which the batting team calls for any time after the 11th over of their innings.
He said, “I like the rule of ‘power surge’ in our place. This makes the match a little interesting. While chasing the target, you never feel that you are out of the match. But we have also seen a lot of wickets falling during this period.
