Annual Kaaba Washing: Like every year, the ritual of washing the Holy Kaaba during the month of Muharram was performed with great enthusiasm on Sunday. This time the ritual of washing the Holy Kaaba was performed on Sunday by Prince Saud bin Mishal bin Abdul Aziz, the Deputy Governor of Mecca, on behalf of King Salman.
Saudi Press reported that upon reaching the Grand Mosque, the Deputy Governor was welcomed by the Minister of Hajj and Umrah and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Two Holy Mosques, Dr. Tawfiq Al-Rabiah. During this time, Sheikh Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, Chairman of Religious Affairs at the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque, as well as many important people were present. During the ritual, the Deputy Governor washed the inside of the Holy Kaaba with Zamzam water mixed with rose water. After this, he performed two rak’at tawaf.
Saudi Arabia has special rights for Islam
Al-Sudais said that washing the Holy Kaaba is an Islamic tradition, a Prophetic Sunnah and a reflection of Saudi leadership on the global stage. He added: ‘God has given this nation the honour of serving and caring for the two holy mosques and the people who visit them, and has put the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at the forefront of this great duty.’ This occasion is very important for Muslims and the people of our country, as God has honoured the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, its leadership and its citizens with this special right.
Every year a ritual is performed at Kaaba
Al Sudais expressed his gratitude to the King and Crown Prince of the country after the ceremony. Along with this, he praised the Prince for providing better services to the devotees and Umrah pilgrims. Dr. Fawaz Al-Dahas, Professor of History at Umm Al-Qura University, told Arab News that ‘Washing the Kaaba is a great honor. This event is organized by the Kingdom’s government every year. This extraordinary event is a unique honor. This event reflects the dedication and reverence of the Saudi Kingdom towards the holiest place on earth.’
Perfume is mixed in Zam Zam water
He said that during this ceremony, the outer cover or Kiswa of the Kaaba is removed and the inner walls are cleaned with Zam Zam water. Rose water and fine perfumes are mixed in the Zam Zam water. The inner walls and floor are cleaned with white clothes soaked in this water. After the cleaning ritual is completed, the Kaaba is covered again.
People from all over the world take part in the ceremony
Dr. Ayed al-Zahrani, a professor of Islamic history, told Arab News that washing the Kaaba is a sacred Islamic tradition that is performed every year during the month of Muharram. He said that the event is attended by senior government officials, including the governor of Mecca or his representative, as well as prominent Islamic figures from around the world.
