The central government has started taking initiatives to reduce the rising price of onion across the country. The effect of the government’s step is now visible in the market. After the sale of onion at Rs. 35 per kg started at government shops in Delhi and Mumbai, its prices have come down in the retail market.

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs says that due to the central government starting subsidized onion sales, the retail price of onion in Delhi has come down from Rs 60 to Rs 55 per kg, while in Mumbai it has come down from Rs 61 to Rs 56 per kg. In Chennai, the retail price of onion has come down from Rs 65 to Rs 58 per kg.

To control the price of onion, the government is now selling it in many major cities including Kolkata, Patna, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar and Guwahati. The government is doing this sale through mobile vans and outlets of NCCF and NAFED. In this, onion is being sold at a price of Rs 35 per kg. Government sources say that in view of the increasing demand for onion, the government has decided to increase the quantity of subsidized onion and expand the distribution channels to include e-commerce platforms, central store outlets and Mother Dairy’s successful stores.

The government has so much stock right now

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs is working closely with the state governments to control onion prices. The ministry said that there is a buffer stock of 4.7 lakh tonnes of onion compared to last year. On the other hand, with the increase in Kharif sowing area this year, the government hopes that onion prices will remain under control in the coming months.
