After two days of political drama in Nepal, the current government led by Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda has fallen. The coalition ministers have collectively resigned and withdrawn their support from the government. With the 24-hour deadline given by the Nepali Congress and CPN UML on Tuesday expiring, the main ally of the Dahal-led government, the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML), walked out of the government.

PM Prachanda was given a 24-hour ultimatum

Earlier, the party had given a one-day ultimatum to Prime Minister Dahal to step down from the post. Eight ministers of CPN-UML, who were part of Dahal’s cabinet formed on March 4 this year, submitted their resignations at the Prime Minister’s residence on Wednesday. Let us tell you that UML and Nepali Congress agreed to form a new government on Monday night. Oli will lead the new ‘national consensus government’ for one and a half years. Former Nepal Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba will be the Prime Minister for the remaining term.

Nepali Congress is the largest party in the country with 89 seats

It is worth noting that the largest party in the Nepal Parliament, the Nepali Congress, has 89 seats while the CPN-UML has 78 seats. In this way, the combined strength of the two big parties has become 167, which is enough for a majority of 138 seats in the 275-member House of Representatives. Let us tell you that 13 governments have been formed in Nepal in the last 16 years.

Prime Minister Prachanda will face trust vote

It was decided at a meeting of CPN (Maoist Centre) office-bearers held in Baluwatar on Tuesday that the prime minister will not tender his resignation but will face a vote of confidence in Parliament within 30 days of withdrawing support. On Wednesday, the Nepali Congress formally endorsed the agreement reached with the CPN-UML on the formation of a new alliance.
