Sandeep Patil has written, ‘The trend of hiring foreign coaches and support staff started in India after 2000. This brought great benefits, because India’s foreign record has continuously improved. It all started with John Wright becoming India’s first foreign coach. He has written, ‘I think John was the ideal coach for India. He was soft-spoken, polite and well-mannered. Always kept to himself and was happy living under the shadow of Sourav Ganguly. He was rarely in the news. Greg Chappell was the opposite. He was in the news every day.

Sandeep Patil believes that for John Wright, every player was equal and for him the team was paramount. He has written in his book, ‘During Wright’s tenure there was no such thing as senior or junior. This was a team. He believed that all senior players are leaders in some way or the other. He respected him and gave him free rein. I think Anil Kumble could not do this and Greg Chappell too. (input language)
