The confusion regarding the dates of general elections in Pakistan is not ending. Meanwhile, the Chief Justice of Pakistan said, God willing, general elections will be held in Pakistan on February 8. The Chief Justice of Pakistan has given this statement after the Election Commission and President Alvi agreed on the date.
Chief Justice Isa made these comments after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Friday issued a notification to hold general elections on February 8 and submitted it to the Supreme Court. Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja met President Alvi on Thursday on the directions of the Supreme Court and the President’s Office later issued a statement. He said, general elections will be held on February 8. The development came hours after the Election Commission’s counsel told the apex court. On Friday, Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Usman Awan submitted the ECP’s election notification to a three-judge bench of Chief Justice Isa, Justice Athar Minallah and Justice Amin-ud-din Khan.
A three-judge bench was hearing petitions filed by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, among others. Chief Justice Isa said the people of Pakistan are entitled to elections and expressed hope that all institutions will play their constitutional role in conducting the elections. Urged the ECP to release the election program after completing the preparations.
The top judge also said that by not giving the date of elections, the country was put into worry. He said, ‘There was also a fear that elections would not be held. CJP said, according to the law and the Constitution, the Supreme Court has no role in deciding the date of elections. He said it was surprising that the President had suggested seeking guidance from the court on this matter.
