According to Pakistani media, the price of a donkey has reached 3 lakh Pakistani rupees. Rs 300,000 is a huge amount for these animals that carry goods, but this price is a problem for those who make a living by driving donkey carts.
According to media reports, most of the local buyers did not come to the weekly donkey market held in Karachi’s Lyari due to the rising prices of donkeys. At the same time, people say that China is the reason behind the rising prices.
Actually, in China, donkey skin is used to make beauty products. Along with this, donkey skin is also used in the production of a traditional Chinese medicine called Ejiao. This is the reason why millions of donkeys are killed in China every year.
Ejiao is a traditional Chinese medicine made from collagen extracted from donkey skin. This collagen is mixed with herbs and other ingredients to make beauty products in the form of tablets and liquids. Ejiao products have grown rapidly over the past decade.
The annual production of Ejiao increased by 20 percent from 3200 to 5600 tan between 2013 and 2016. Its production has increased by 160 percent between 2016 and 2021. There is every possibility of it increasing by 200 percent by 2027.
Due to the rising prices of donkeys, donkey cart drivers are saying that the donkeys that were sold for 8 to ₹12000 are now being sold for 30 to 35000, which is why these donkey cart drivers will now be barely able to make a living. In the same Economic Survey of 2024, it has also been said that the number of donkeys is also quite large and at present there are 6,60,000 donkeys in the country.
