Asian News International (ANI), a news agency that provides multimedia feeds to major news publishers, has alleged unauthorized use of ‘its original news content’. ANI filed a lawsuit in the Delhi High Court against OpenAI, accusing it of violating the law through artificial intelligence. ANI is reportedly the first Indian publisher to file a lawsuit against OpenAI for violating intellectual property rights. This case will be heard in the court of Justice Amit Bansal in Delhi High Court on Tuesday.

ANI alleges that OpenAI attempted to gain commercial advantage in two ways that violated the law. Alleging unauthorized use of ANI’s content, OpenAI alleged that OpenAI used ANI’s content to train its large language models (LLM). Apart from this, OpenAI’s chatbot – ChatGPT answers the questions asked by the users in a way, in which the exact content of ANI has been used.

Union Minister Vaishnav had warned about the dangers

It is noteworthy that on National Press Day on November 16, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had warned about the dangers arising due to the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). He underlined the threats posed by AI to the intellectual property of users creating digital content, including news publishers.
