Nepal Internet outages: Last week, internet users in Nepal had to face problems when internet services there were affected. On Thursday (May 2, 2024), customers of many telecom companies there automatically went offline and they found it very difficult to access internet related services during this period.
During this period, a theory related to this matter came to light from the neighboring country to India, in which it was claimed that Nepal is going to introduce a new note of Rs 100 and in it it will show three parts of India (Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura and Kalapani). This is the reason why the net services provided by India have been affected. However, the truth behind this is something else. The impact on internet services has nothing to do with the new currency notes coming into Nepal.
Indian vendors provide services to Nepal’s telecom companies
Actually, these services are provided by Indian firms to the telecom companies in Nepal. Telecom companies had recently warned that they could stop the services at any time. Although the internet was not completely shut down, its speed was definitely reduced at some places.

In this regard, telecom companies had also warned last year that if their dues were not paid, then they would suspend services. At present, Nepal has to pay three billion Nepalese rupees (22.5 million dollars) to Indian vendors. The Nepal government had told the telecom companies there that the government will make this payment only when the Nepalese telecom companies pay them taxes. Money will not be given to Indian vendors until they pay taxes.
ISPAN Chief warned: This may happen in future also
Internet Service Providers Association of Nepal (ISPAN) also clarified that non-payment of dues was the real reason behind the impact of internet services. ISPAN Chief Suvash Khadka further warned – this can happen in future also. It is not in our hands. Internet has become an important service in today’s era and the government needs to answer on this.
