Lahore. Pakistan’s newly appointed coach Jason Gillespie has given a strong message to his team. Australia’s Gillespie said he wants his talented players to remain authentic and not change their game to suit a particular style. Gillespie says that to progress in Test cricket he only needs to remain positive and aggressive. Jason Gillespie, who led Yorkshire to County Championship titles in 2014 and 2015, has signed a two-year contract with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
Pakistan has appointed former Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie as the coach of the Test team. This responsibility for the ODI and T20 team has been handed over to former South African batsman Gary Kirsten. India won the ODI World Cup in 2011 under the guidance of Kirsten. Gillespie was quoted as saying in a PCB podcast, ‘I just want the Pakistan cricket team to play the style of cricket that suits them. This is the most important thing for me. I believe don’t try to be something you’re not!’
Jason Gillespie, 49, said: ‘You need to be realistic about how you do it. I would go out there and say: Just be positive, aggressive, entertaining. Play with a smile on your face and entertain the fans. Gillespie said, ‘There will come a time when you have to work hard and this is Test cricket. This is a test of your skills, mental ability and patience. There are times when you have to attack and sometimes you have to bear the pressure of the opponent.
Gillespie, who took 142 wickets in 97 ODI matches for Australia, said that Pakistan has skilled players but consistency is something they need to work on. Gillespie said, ‘If we can be as consistent as possible in our performance then hopefully runs will be on the scoreboard and we can get some wins. Watching Pakistan play, I know that they are very talented and skilled players. Players need to decide how they want to see themselves and how can we do that.
Jason Gillespie, who took 259 wickets in 71 Tests for Australia, said, ‘I look at talented and exciting players from a batting point of view. Many of them are very good stroke players, technically very skilled players. He said, ‘You have such fast bowlers who bowl at fast pace and swing the ball. You have spinners who spin the ball fast. It is very exciting for me to have such a Test team which has all these resources. (input language)
