Prachanda Government Loses Confidence: In Nepal, nestled in the lap of the Himalayas, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda could not prove majority in the Parliament on Friday (12 July). Meanwhile, President Ramchandra Paudel gave political parties a deadline till Sunday to prove majority. Even before that, former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli staked claim to form a new government.

It is clear that Nepal’s political turmoil is going to last for a few more days. However, if we talk about the President’s deadline, the members of the House will have to present a majority with the support of the parties represented in the lower house by 5 pm on Sunday. Earlier, the President asked Prachanda to remain as the caretaker Prime Minister until a new government is formed.

Ultimately they were defeated for the fifth time

If we understand the political developments in Nepal in detail, then Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ lost the floor test in the House in the afternoon. In the country’s 275-member House of Representatives, 69-year-old Prachanda got 63 votes, while 194 votes were cast against the no-confidence motion. At least 138 votes were needed to get the confidence vote. 258 members of the House of Representatives participated in the voting, while one member was absent. Nepal Communist Party-Maoist Center (CPN-MC) President Prachanda was successful in getting the confidence vote four times after assuming office on December 25, 2022, but this time he failed.

Mathematics of Numbers with KP Sharma Oli!

The Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) led by former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli withdrew support from the Prachanda-led government last week after signing a power-sharing agreement with the Nepali Congress, the largest party in the House. The Nepali Congress has 89 seats in the House of Representatives, while the CPN-UML has 78 seats. Thus, the combined number of both is 167, which is much more than the 138 required for a majority in the lower house.

Will the Prime Minister of Nepal change one after the other?

Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has already endorsed Oli as the next prime minister. Deuba and Oli signed a seven-point agreement on Monday to oust the Prachanda-led government and form a new coalition government. According to the agreement, Oli and Deuba will share the prime minister’s post alternately during the remaining term of the House of Representatives.

In the first phase, Oli will become the Prime Minister for one and a half years and after that Deuba will remain the Prime Minister for the remaining period. Prachanda’s party has 32 seats in the House of Representatives. He was elected Prime Minister for the third time on 25 December 2022 with the support of CPN-UML.
