Kathmandu Aircraft Crash: A plane crashed shortly after takeoff in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu on Wednesday (July 24). There were 19 people on board the plane. The pilot is the only survivor. Airport security chief Arjun Chand Thakur said the plane was carrying two crew members and 17 technicians to Pokhara city for a maintenance check.

“Only the captain was rescued alive and is undergoing treatment at a hospital,” Tej Bahadur Paudyal, a spokesman for Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport, said, Sky News reported. A doctor at the hospital said the pilot was taken to Kathmandu Medical College Hospital with an eye injury but is out of danger. However, it is not yet known what caused the crash.

It was not raining at the time of the accident

The head of Nepal’s Tribhuvan International Airport said that initial assessment showed that the plane flying from Kathmandu to Pokhara had turned in the wrong direction. He further said that “as soon as it took off, it turned to the right, which should have turned to the left.” It is monsoon season in Kathmandu, but it was not raining at the time of the accident. However, visibility was low in the capital.

According to reports, the plane was flying slightly above the runway and then tilted before crashing. Police officer Basant Rajouri said that the authorities have taken out the bodies of all 18 people.

Nepali army personnel engaged in rescue

As soon as the information about this accident was received, the Nepal government sent army personnel to the site of the incident for rescue and relief work. Teams ranging from medical to army personnel are engaged in rescue work.
