In the third term of the Modi government, the Lok Sabha Speaker will be from the BJP. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP), which had demanded the unanimous selection of the Lok Sabha Speaker, has also agreed on Tuesday to support the BJP candidate.

Apart from TDP, all the allies of NDA have already agreed to support the candidate decided by BJP. BJP will now inform the allies about the name decided by it for this post. It is worth mentioning that BJP had entrusted the responsibility of creating consensus between NDA and opposition for the post of president to Defence Minister Rajnath. After knowing the opinion of the allies, an important meeting was held in this regard at Rajnath’s residence on Tuesday. Party sources claim that all the allies have assured to support BJP for the post of president. BJP has decided to give the post of vice president to the allies. A decision will be taken in a day or two on who will get this post. However, there is a possibility that the post of vice president will go to TDP.

TDP’s stand shocks opposition

The opposition was expecting that the government’s biggest ally TDP would stake claim to the post of Speaker. The opposition wanted that the voices of differences in the ruling NDA should come to the fore in the matter of the Speaker’s election. As part of this strategy, the opposition had said that if TDP fields its candidate for this post, then it would consider supporting it. However, after the consensus reached in the NDA for this post, the opposition’s strategy has suffered a setback. Now it will be interesting to see whether the opposition fields its candidate or not despite all the circumstances being in NDA’s favour.

Rajnath Singh will now talk to the opposition

Election for the post of Speaker is likely on 26th June. Rajnath has created a consensus in NDA for this post. It has been decided that the post of Deputy Speaker will be given to the government’s ally instead of the opposition. Rajnath will now seek the support of the opposition parties after informing them about the decision of the party and the alliance. BJP hopes that according to the traditions till now, the opposition will support them in the matter of the Speaker’s post.
