A 75-year-old man who was missing for four days has been found alive in a bog.

Michael Altmaier was found laying in the area of muddy ground in Maine’s Mount Blue State Park on Friday afternoon, having last been seen on 8 July.

It is believed the man had fallen over a ledged embankment, became disoriented and ended up in the area of the bog, where he eventually fell in and was unable to get up, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife said.

A bog is an area of wetland of soft, spongy ground consisting mainly of partially decayed plant matter known as peat, according to National Geographic.

Mr Altmaier had not been seen since last Monday, when he drove to the town of Weld for a meeting, but never arrived.

His car was later discovered by staff at the park and a search was launched by the Maine Warden Service on 12 July.

A paramedic and search volunteers were able to administer initial first aid after locating Mr Altmaier before a service helicopter landed in the area and transported him to a local hospital.

Emergency service personnel said Mr Altmaier was in “surprisingly good condition despite spending the last four days laying in the area of the bog,” the fisheries and wildlife department said.
