Expansion

The colour and effect of the elections kept changing in every phase. Though political attacks on each other had started months ago, but as the polling day came closer, the strategy kept changing as per the need…the arrows coming out of the mouths became more poisonous. In some phases, the ruling party seemed to have an advantage, while in some, the opposition also won.

First phase: April 19

21 states – 102 seats

Muslim League’s manifesto…BJP got a shock

In the general election which seemed to be issueless, there was a lot of commotion when Congress’ manifesto was released. BJP readily accepted Congress’ commitment towards Muslim Personal Law and opposition to UCC and called it the manifesto of Muslim League. In response, Congress made the alleged manipulation in electoral bonds an issue. BJP, in its manifesto released five days before the polling, expressed commitment towards UCC, one country one election. Calling the manifesto an attempt at communal polarization, Congress called it a bundle of lies. In the first phase, polling was held on 102 seats in 21 states on April 19. Out of these, eight seats were from Western UP on which SP and Congress performed better than before.

BJP did not get any benefit

In this phase, the number of BJP seats decreased from 37 to 30. Congress and Indi alliance made huge gains. While in the last elections they had got 14 seats, this time the alliance got 53 seats.

Arrows of propaganda war

The propaganda war that started with the talk of development reached the stage of attacking the parties. Within a few days, personal comments on the leaders started. While Congress’ Rahul Gandhi became the target, the opposition did not spare even Prime Minister Narendra Modi and called him a dictator.
