Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi will take over as the new Army Chief on Sunday. He will replace General Manoj Pandey after his 26-month tenure ends. Lieutenant General Dwivedi has become the 30th Army Chief. He is taking over at a time when the Indian Army is undergoing major modernization through structural reforms as well as indigenization.

The government appointed Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi as the next Chief of Army Staff from the afternoon of June 30, 2024. Born on July 1, 1964, Dwivedi was commissioned into the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles of the Indian Army on December 15, 1984. Lieutenant General Dwivedi has had a long tenure as the Northern Army Commander. He has long experience of operations in the ongoing military standoff on the LAC in eastern Ladakh.

40 years of long experience

He has held several command, staff, instructional and overseas appointments during his long and distinguished service spanning nearly 40 years. His appointments as Commander include 18 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles Battalion, 26 Sector Assam Rifles Brigade, Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) and 9 Corps. In the rank of Lieutenant General, he has held important appointments including Director General Infantry.

Studied at Sainik School Rewa

Dwivedi, an alumnus of Sainik School Rewa, National Defence College and US Army War College, has also studied at DSSC Wellington and Army War College, Mhow. Apart from this, he was awarded ‘Distinguished Fellow’ at the prestigious NDC equivalent course at USAWC, Carlisle, USA. He holds an MPhil in Defence and Management and two master’s degrees in Strategic Studies and Military Science.
