Lebanon Hezbollah: Lebanon, which is called the Paris of the Middle East, is known today because of Hezbollah. Lebanon has a Prime Minister and a President, but it would not be wrong to call them more than paper tigers, because the real power lies with Hezbollah. Lebanon is a democratic country in name only, but here the major political and military positions are reserved for specific religious representatives.
In Lebanon, the post of President is reserved for a Maronite Catholic, the post of Prime Minister is reserved for a Sunni Muslim and the post of Speaker of Parliament is reserved for a Shia Muslim. The posts of Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Deputy Prime Minister are reserved for Greek Orthodox Christians. The post of General Staff of the Lebanese Armed Forces is reserved for the Druze. The distribution of posts in Lebanon is based on ‘the greater the number, the greater the share’. This slogan satisfies all the communities of Lebanon in the short term, but it is having long term effects.
Lebanon in the news after pager explosion
At present, the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah has emerged as the de facto ruler within Lebanon. This organization is far more effective than the official government. On Tuesday, thousands of pagers used by Hezbollah members exploded simultaneously, killing about 11 people and injuring more than 3 thousand people. Hezbollah has blamed Israel for this blast, while there was no comment from Israel.
It is impossible to overturn Hezbollah’s decision
In Lebanon, elections are held and representatives are elected, but the real power lies not with the elected members but with Hezbollah and its allies. Hezbollah is a Shia extremist organization that expresses loyalty to Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In Lebanon, Hezbollah has power over the executive, legislature and judiciary. No one within Lebanon has the power to overturn Hezbollah’s decisions.
Prime Minister and President bow down before Hezbollah
Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah does not hold any public office, but he is the de facto ruler of Lebanon. Nasrallah gives speeches on the country’s state television. Nasrallah decides the country’s policies and sets rules and regulations to follow them. Leave alone the common people of Lebanon, even the Prime Minister and the President make their policies according to Nasrallah.
