According to police officials, Joy, a resident of Marayamuttam, was told by his colleagues that he was engaged in cleaning the Thampanoor portion of the canal. Temporary workers, including Joy, were employed by a contractor who had received a contract from the railways to clean the portion of the canal falling in his area. Joy was engaged in cleaning plastic and hard waste along with his colleagues in the 200-metre long canal tunnel that passes under the tracks at the railway station.
