A municipal corporation employee was swept away while cleaning the Amaizhjan canal in Kerala’s capital Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday morning. He was cleaning the canal with two other workers. As soon as the water flow increased due to heavy rains, his fellow workers came out of the canal, but he could not come out. Thiruvananthapuram District Collector Geromic George said, the rescue operation is underway. The team engaged in the rescue operation is simultaneously searching for the employee from both sides of the tunnel. Efforts to find the corporation employee have been going on for more than 12 hours. People engaged in relief and rescue work are also trying to go inside the tunnel.

According to police officials, Joy, a resident of Marayamuttam, was told by his colleagues that he was engaged in cleaning the Thampanoor portion of the canal. Temporary workers, including Joy, were employed by a contractor who had received a contract from the railways to clean the portion of the canal falling in his area. Joy was engaged in cleaning plastic and hard waste along with his colleagues in the 200-metre long canal tunnel that passes under the tracks at the railway station.

Divers could not go beyond 40 meters in the tunnel

According to officials, when information was received about Joy being swept away in the canal, fire department officials, police, municipal corporation employees and the city mayor, among others, reached the spot. Scuba divers were also deployed to search for the employee, but they could not go beyond 40 meters in the tunnel.

Robots also helped in the search, but no success was achieved in three hours

There is also news of robots being used to search for a 42-year-old Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation employee who went missing in the Amayazhanjan canal near Thiruvananthapuram railway station. The rescue operation is currently underway.
