Karachi heatwave killed 450 people in just 4 days: Edhi Foundation

People in Karachi, Pakistan are suffering due to the scorching heat. At least four hundred and fifty people have lost their lives here in just four days. An NGO Edhi Foundation has made this claim on Wednesday (June 26, 2024). The NGO also claims that the situation has become so bad that there is no space left to keep the dead bodies even in the morgues. Edhi Foundation told that these deaths have happened in just four days.

Edhi Foundation said that 427 people have lost their lives due to extreme heat in four days, which does not include Wednesday’s figure. NGO head Faisal Edhi said that the foundation has four morgues in Karachi and now the situation has become such that there is no space left to keep the bodies in all the four morgues. On the other hand, on Tuesday, Pakistani officials had said that at least 20 people had died in 48 hours.

Faisal Edhi said that most of the dead are homeless and drug addicts who lie on the streets. He said that 135 bodies were received at his morgues on Tuesday and 128 on Monday. Edhi Trust is Pakistan’s largest welfare foundation, which works for the poor, homeless people, orphans and women lying on the streets across the country.

Pakistan had said on Tuesday that at least 20 people had died in Karachi in 48 hours. Relief service officials said that 10 more bodies were recovered on the streets of Karachi and other places on Tuesday. A day before this, on Monday also, post-mortem of 10 bodies was conducted.

Police surgeon Summaiya Syed said, “Most of the bodies are of drug addicts living on the sidewalks or roads and they apparently died due to extreme heat in the city.” Officials said that probably all the deaths were due to extreme heat as the temperature has reached more than 40 degrees Celsius.
