Employment remains a major issue this time in the Lok Sabha elections. Especially after the report of the International Labor Organization (ILO), which claims that 83 percent of India’s unemployed workforce is youth. But analysis of government data obtained from different sources has revealed that during the last few years of Modi government, there has been a significant increase in jobs and a decline in the unemployment rate.

Data from the Periodic Labor Force Survey (PLFS), Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO), Reserve Bank of India (RBI), National Career Services (NCS) portal and various employment-centric schemes of the Central Government show growth in jobs and decline in unemployment rate. . The last six years of PLFS data indicate an improving trend in the Labor Force Participation Rate (LFPR) and Worker Population Ratio (WPR). Its data shows that employment in the country has increased from 46.8 percent in 2017-18 to 56 percent in 2022-23.

Unemployment rate declined in six years

Similarly, labor force participation has also increased from 49.8 percent in 2017-18 to 57.9 percent in 2022-23. At the same time, during the period of these six years, there has been a decline of about three percent in the unemployment rate and it has come down from 6 percent in 2017-18 to 3.2 percent in 2022-23. According to the data, the labor force participation rate increased by 3.1 percent in 2022-23 against 2.7 percent, indicating more jobs than demand.

Unemployment rate fell more in rural areas

The unemployment rate in rural areas was 5.3 percent in 2017-18, which came down to 2.4 percent in 2022-23. At the same time, during this period in urban areas it came down from 7.7 percent to 5.3 percent.

Youth unemployment rate fell by 8%

The unemployment rate among youth was 17.8 percent in 2017-18, which came down to 10 percent in 2022-23. During this period, a significant decline was also recorded in the unemployment rate among women and it came down from 5.6 percent in 2017-18 to 2.9 percent in 2022-23.

6.1 crore new members joined EPFO

According to EPFO ​​data, 6.1 crore new members joined EPFO ​​during the last six years. The latest KLEMS database released by RBI also shows that in 9 years, the estimated employment in the country has increased from 47 crore in 2013-14 to 55.3 crore in 2021-22. Similarly, the National Career Service (NCS) portal launched by the government to bring companies and employees on one platform saw a 214 per cent increase in job vacancies in 2023-24 compared to 2022-23.
