India on Wednesday demanded action against those responsible for the death of Indian citizen Satnam Singh from Italy. Secretary of Overseas Indian Affairs in the Ministry of External Affairs Muktesh Pardeshi raised the matter with Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Maria Vignali. Pardeshi said that the Indian Embassy in Italy is in touch with Satnam Singh’s family for consular assistance and bringing the body to India. Many Indian migrants work in the fields in a village named Latina, south of Italy’s capital Rome. One such worker, Satnam Singh, was working in the field on June 17, when his hand was cut off in an accident. It is alleged that the owner of the field was negligent in his treatment, due to which he later died.

The trade union also condemned the farm owner

The Fly CGIL trade union (an Italian organization for workers in the agricultural and food industry) also confirmed the incident and said that Satnam Singh was badly injured while working in the field. The insensitivity with which the farm owner threw Satnam out of the house is reprehensible.
