New Delhi. Indian team spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is originally from Tamil Nadu. Born in Chennai, Ashwin can speak Tamil as well as Hindi and English. He advocated people of South India to learn Hindi. While talking about his recently released book, “I Have the Streets: A Kutty Cricket Story” with Chennai Super Kings’ Content Head Radhakrishnan, he criticized the anti-Hindi campaign run by local political parties.

During the conversation, Ashwin shared some anecdotes to emphasize the need to learn other languages. He said that it is necessary if one wants to make a career beyond their native state. He also said that learning a language can go a long way in getting acceptance from others and contributing to the conversation. Let us tell you that Tamil Nadu party DMK had run an anti-Hindi campaign in the state. The slogan ‘Hindi Theriyadu Poda’ was given, which means I do not know Hindi, get lost! Ashwin criticized such things.

Ashwin also spoke about his challenges of not being able to converse in Hindi. He said that there can be two mindsets. A non-Hindi speaker can feel proud to say ‘Hindi Theriyadu Poda’. Or else he can learn basic conversations in Hindi or communicate well with Hindi speaking people to overcome the language barrier.
