How train brakes work, which brake is installed in Vande Bharat? Question asked, know the correct answer

Most of us must have traveled by train at some time or the other. This is quite convenient. But many times such questions come to our mind, the answers to which cannot be found. Then we leave it like this. One such question was asked these days on the social media platform Quora. The question was how does the train brake work? What is its complete system? Which brake is installed in Vande Bharat Express? Is there any separate brake system in goods trains? An engineer of Indian Railways has given this answer, which is very interesting.

Animesh Kumar Sinha, who describes himself as an engineer in Indian Railways, said, air brakes are installed in train coaches. These are technically called pneumatic brakes. These are connected to a pressure pipe, which gives pressure 5 times the atmospheric pressure. It is installed in every wheel from the engine to the last compartment and is connected to the driver’s brake handle. When the driver applies the brakes, the brake pipe applies the brakes in just 6 seconds. After this the brake block or brake pad gets stuck to the wheel. The friction is so high that the brake pads get hot and the train stops.

5 types of brake boxes
There are 5 types of brake coaches. For example, LHV coaches are equipped with pneumatic disc brakes. In this, brakes are applied due to air pressure. They appear to shine just like glass. Nowadays only LHV coaches are being installed in most of the mail express trains. ICF coaches are fitted with pneumatic tread brakes. These happen from outside to inside. Almost all MEMU, DEMU and EMU trains are fitted with tread brakes. These are quite powerful. These are also installed in goods trains.

Vande Bharat trains would have disc brakes
Now comes the matter of Vande Bharat trains. EP disc brakes (ElectroPneumatic) are installed in these. Its brakes are not next to the wheel, but are attached to the wheel itself. In this, the brake signal is transmitted not by air pressure but by electricity. Therefore they work very fast and brakes can be applied immediately. In the photo below you can see that the dark purple colored brakes are pressing the wheels from both the sides.
