Hemant Soren sworn in as 13th CM of Jharkhand 23 years of political journey President’s Rule imposed through Jharkhand Assembly Elections

Hemant Soren sworn in as 13th CM of Jharkhand: JMM leader Hemant Soren has once again taken charge of Jharkhand. He took oath as the 13th Chief Minister of the state on Thursday (July 4). After Hemant Soren took oath, the new government that has come into existence in the state will have a maximum life of 6 months. The term of the current Jharkhand Assembly is ending on January 5, 2025.

There is a possibility that along with Haryana and Maharashtra, assembly elections may be held in Jharkhand in October itself. If this happens, the tenure of this government will be only three to four months. Earlier, on February 2, the chapter of the government formed under the leadership of Champai Soren was closed in just 152 days.

13 CMs in 23 years and 3 times President’s rule

The reality is that Jharkhand, which came into existence on 15 November 2000 as the 28th state on the map of India, has remained a laboratory of political instability. This state, which is about 23 years and 8 months old, has had 13 CMs so far and President’s rule has been imposed thrice. Hemant Soren has started his third innings as CM. His total tenure so far has been about 5 years and 199 days. If he remains in this post till the upcoming assembly elections, then his tenure will be increased by a few more days.

Only Raghuvar Das completed his term

The average tenure of Chief Ministers in Jharkhand is about one and a half years. Raghuvar Das was the only CM whose government completed its term from 2014 to 2019. Since the assembly elections in 2019, three governments have been formed in the state so far. Jharkhand also has this unique political record that independent MLA Madhu Koda has also been the Chief Minister here. He remained in this post for about two years.

Shibu Soren also never completed his term

Hemant Soren’s father and JMM president Shibu Soren also became the Chief Minister thrice, but could never complete his term. In his first term as Chief Minister, he was able to sit on the chair for only 10 days. Between 2000 and 2014, nine governments led by five Chief Ministers were formed in Jharkhand and President’s rule was imposed thrice.

During this period, Babulal Marandi, Arjun Munda, Shibu Soren, Madhu Koda and Hemant Soren became CMs in turn and their average tenure was about 15 months. The tenure of the first CM of the state, Babulal Marandi, was about two years and three months. Arjun Munda became CM three times and his total tenure was a little less than six years. Jharkhand has also seen President’s rule three times for a total of 645 days.
