Harini Amarasuriya: Harini Amarasuriya has taken charge as the 16th Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. She has become the third woman in the history of Sri Lanka to hold the post of Prime Minister. The new PM of Sri Lanka is very educated and also has a special connection with India.

Harini Amarasuriya’s educational journey started from India. Due to the closure of schools and colleges in Sri Lanka during the Tamil movement, he took admission in Hindu College of Delhi University in 1990. Here he completed his graduation in sociology. During her days at Hindu College, Harini not only excelled in studies but also actively participated in college festivals and debates. Interestingly, famous film director Imtiaz Ali was his batchmate. After graduation, he completed his PhD in Social Humanities from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.

Return and social work in Sri Lanka
After education, Harini Amarasuriya worked in health and education related NGOs in Sri Lanka. His efforts to help children affected by the tsunami earned him widespread recognition. After this, he worked as a professor in a college and taught in the field of sociology and humanities.

Harini’s political career
In 2019, Harini entered politics through the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) party. Due to his social commitment and leadership abilities, he was elected MP in 2020. In September 2024, she was appointed as the interim Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, which is a testament to her leadership abilities.

Hindu College’s pride and connection with India
Hindu College Principal Anju Srivastava expressed pride in Harini’s achievement and said that it is an honor for the college. He said that Hindu College education would have helped Harini hone her leadership skills. This new role of Harini can prove to be important in further strengthening the relations between India and Sri Lanka. His former batchmates also expressed happiness over this achievement.
