Hajj 2024: More than 1 thousand Hajj pilgrims died this year due to extreme heat in Saudi Arabia, report claims

Hajj 2024 Death: The number of people dying during Hajj pilgrimage is increasing continuously. The death toll during Hajj in Mecca has now crossed 1000. More than half of them were non-registered Hajj pilgrims. According to the AFP report, 600 people from Egypt alone were included in this. Who performed the pilgrimage in the scorching heat in Saudi Arabia. Hajj pilgrims are dying due to excessive heat and lack of proper arrangements in Saudi Arabia. In such a situation, questions are being raised on the entire Saudi government.

This information has been given by diplomats who spoke to AFP news agency and other news agencies. Neither Egypt nor Saudi Arabia has officially released the number of people who died in this year’s Hajj, which is usually a matter of prestige for the Saudi government. However, Saudi officials said that about 1 lakh 80 thousand pilgrims have traveled to Mecca.

What is the temperature of Mecca-Medina?

The effects of a scorching heat wave during the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia this month have been made worse by a lack of homes and other services such as cooling centers for those traveling without permits, reports the Washington Post. Temperatures in the holy city of Mecca have risen above 125 degrees Fahrenheit during the 5-day pilgrimage that began on June 14, according to the Saudi Meteorological Center.  

However, this time in Saudi Arabia it is getting hotter than last year. The temperature here has crossed 51 degrees Celsius. Last week also, Saudi’s Metrological Department had recorded the temperature of Mecca Medina as 51.8 degrees Celsius. There is severe heat during the day, the night temperature is also being recorded around 40 degrees Celsius, which is creating problems for the pilgrims.

It is believed in the Muslim religion that every Muslim must perform the Haj pilgrimage once in his lifetime. This journey involves staying outdoors for long periods of time in many rituals and walking long distances. Also, this journey is quite expensive and the Saudi Arabian government approves only a certain number of pilgrim visas every year, with a quota issued for every Muslim-majority country.

During Hajj, pilgrims have to walk about 15 kilometers. Pilgrims first go to Mecca wearing Ihram. They circle around Kaaba. Then they circle between Safa and Marwa hills 7 times. After that they spend the night in Mina and the next morning in Arafat. Then the Hajj pilgrimage is completed with the last Tawaf. In such a situation, this is a very hard work, that too in this scorching heat, due to which there are problems ranging from heat stroke to blood pressure. Elderly people and women are not able to bear it.
